Since establishing relations with Cuba in 2002, Solomon Islands has an accredited Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba.

His Excellency Collin Beck presented his letter of Credentials to the Republic of Cuba’s Vice President, His Excellency Juan Almeida Bosque.

Ambassador Beck conveyed Solomon Islands appreciation for the fifty medical scholarships offered to Solomon Islands including the medical brigade due to work in Solomon Islands.

He informed the Cuban authorities of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources proposed visit to Cuba to facilitate implementation of a signed Cooperation Agreement in March this year by Minister Patterson Oti.

Amongst other issues discussed are the proposed expansion Solomon Islands bilateral cooperation and engagement with Cuba to other areas.

Cuba has a successful literacy programme in a number of countries including sports and health programmes and hopes over time these could be expanded to Solomon Islands to support and compliment existing programmes in the country.

Ambassador Beck together with other Pacific Ambassadors and Representatives met with the 20 Kiribati students already studying in Cuba and was impressed by the speed in which the students have acquired Spanish language.

Kiribati students composed of 16 females and 4 males are still undergoing language training.

Ambassador Beck hopes Solomon Islands students will soon follow.
