PM outlines government priorities
The Prime Minister has outlined the key areas in which the Government plans to push ahead with reform.
Speaking at an internal event for Cabinet Office staff, Mr Brown said that the Government would strive to "put patients first" in the NHS and "make sure the NHS is there" for all British families. In education, the Government will "encourage aspirations" and help create "more opportunity for all", and there will be measures aimed at putting "affordable housing within the reach of more and more people".
He said:
"I want a Britain where people rise as far as their talents take them, and then all the talents of each of us can contribute to the wellbeing of all of us.
The task of this government is to break down the barriers to opportunity and ensure that in a fast-changing world there is opportunity and security for all."
The PM added that he had "a vision" for Britain that took into account the changing forces of global economic competition, security, climate change and "rising aspirations".
Mr Brown will make a detailed announcement on the Government's legislative programme in Parliament on 11 July.
