Malaita Province Sets Up T&C Planning Board

Malaita Province Sets Up Own Town And Country Planning Board

The Malaita Provincial Government is currently reviving the province's Town and Country Planning Board after being left inactive for many years.

New Members of the board were appointed by the Malaita Provincial executive.

The appointments were gazetted and made effective on June 7 by National Minister of Lands and Survey Reverend Leslie Boseto.

Provincial Minister for Lands and Urban Development Robert Madeo is the chairperson of the new board.

Mr Madeo said the main objective of the Malaita Town and Country Planning is ensuring the overall planning to improve and maintain a healthy living environment in Auki and other sub-provincial townships.

He said the other aim is to provide convenient services to all Auki residents and to provide sufficient land to cater for urban and economic growth in the provincial capital.

Other aims included the strengthening of Auki's role as the institutional and commercial hub of Malaita Province and to encourage visual improvements in the town centre and to encourage small business development in the district centres of Malaita Province.

"The Malaita Town and Country Planning Board only have jurisdiction only in areas declared to be Local Planning Areas and Controlled Areas where Auki Town falls under and plans and controls do not and cannot extend to customary land," Mr Madeo said.
