MEDIA ALERT
500,000 Person Petition Sends Message to Bush and APEC For Binding Emissions Targets
As US President George W Bush arrives in Australia tomorrow, so too will the leader of the global community campaigning movement Ben Winkler, and with him 500,000 signatures from every corner of the globe, calling on world leaders to show strong leadership and commit to binding targets in response to the climate crisis.
“The global protest movement is now a sophisticated network of likeminded global citizens, linked through new technologies” Mr Solomon said.
“Using those technologies, we are sending our decision-makers a message that this global problem needs a global solution, and that message is being delivered in a way that puts the people back in the inner circle of discussions that the ‘APEC fence’ excludes them from.”
In addition to the
half a million person petition, a series of events will be
held
around the world over the weekend, from the North
Pole to our own Great Barrier Reef. The first event will
take place on Friday, 7th September at 8.30am on Bondi
Beach, where surfers will unfurl a 144 square metre banner
calling for climate
targets.
