Burma: Aung San Suu Kyi Makes Rare Appearance
Detained pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, appeared at her front gate yesterday as several hundred courageous monks marched through barricades blocking access to her home in Rangoon.

The monks chanted the "Metta Sutta" - the Buddha's words on loving kindness - as Aung san Suu Kyi held a brief discussion with one of the leading monks.
Supporters joined hands behind the monks and repeatedly shouted "Be free very soon!"
At the same time a thousand monks marched to the Chinese Embassy in Rangoon. China is by far the junta's biggest supporter and supplier of military hardware. After stopping to chant the Metta Sutta outside the embassy, the monks continued their march through the city.
In Mandalay, Burma's spiritual capital and home to more than 300,000 monks, thousands of clergy staged the biggest anti-junta protest to date. Buddhist religious flags were flown and alms bowls turned upside down, a symbol of the continuing alms' boycott against the junta's generals.

This is the fifth day of protests since the passing of the 17 September deadline, when the military regime refused to apologize for their brutal crackdown on protesting monks in Pakokku, central Burma.
