Burma regime is illegitmate
The ruling military government in Burma is "illegitimate" and should stand down in favour of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the Prime Minister has said.
Responding to MPs during Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Brown said that the nobel peace prize winner had revailed in democatic elections and should be recognised as the true leaders of the Burmese people.
He called for a tightening of UN sanctions against the country to show the "repressive" regime that their conduct has been "unaceptable.
The PM added that he hoped UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon could engage with Burnese leaders and help bring about "reconciliation".
On Saturday the PM welcomed Burmese Buddhists to Downing Street as people around the world held protests against the regime's recent crackdown on anti-government demonstrations.
Many thousands of Burmese people, including monks and nuns, are believed to have been arrested and detained since marches were first held in mid-August.
