UK And UAE Announce Education Partnership

The UK and the United Arab Emirates have announced a partnership aimed at helping more children from developing countries to gain access to education.

In a joint statement last night, the Prime Minister and the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said the two countries would work together "as partners" in identifying ways to support primary education in a number of countries.

They said:

"Both parties believe that equipping children, wherever they are, with the skills they need to prosper as adults, is the most cost-effective investment the international community can make to promote global security, stability and prosperity. Today we declare that the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom will, for the first time, work together as partners in the international effort to get all children in developing countries, and especially girls, into school.

"Both parties will be committed to identifying the most effective ways to support primary education in the relevant countries and to encourage others in the international community to accelerate their efforts to provide sound primary education to all deprived children. "

Sheikh Al Maktoum recently launched the "Dubai Cares" campaign, which aims to provide primary education to 1 million children deprived of basic education in poor countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
