British PM Congratulates "Inspirational" Al Gore
The Prime Minister has welcomed the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Peace to Al Gore for his work on climate change.
In a Downing Street statement, Gordon Brown praised Mr Gore for "focusing attention across the globe" on the issue of global warming. He also praised the work of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which received the prize jointly with the former US Vice President.
The Prime Minister said:
"I am very pleased that the Nobel Foundation has recognised the work that both Al Gore and the UN have done on climate change.
"Al Gore has been inspirational in focusing attention across the globe on this key issue.
"The IPCC's work on the science of climate change has been vital, and they are now leading a process by which all countries will work together to tackle the effects of climate change.""
Commenting on the IPCC, the Nobel prize committee cited their efforts "to build up and disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change". Mr Gore, 59, said he was "deeply honoured" while IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri said he was "overwhelmed".
Al Gore's film about the effects of climate change, An Inconvenient Truth, won the Oscar for best documentary feature in February 2007.
