Guatemalans Vote in Presidential Run-off Election
Guatemalans are voting Sunday in a run-off presidential election pitting retired General Otto Perez Molina against center-left politician and businessman Alvaro Colom.
Colom and Perez were the top two finishers in the first round of elections in September.
Some opinion polls show the former general, who has pledged to fight crime as part of his platform, with a slight lead over Colom, who focused on poverty issues in his campaign.
About 50 people have been killed in the run-up to the election, making it the deadliest political campaign since the end of Guatemala's 36-year civil war in 1996.
An aide to Perez was killed by unknown gunmen in Guatemala City last month. The former general has suggested it was a response to his threats to crack down on drug trafficking if elected.
Perez's aide, Aura Salazar, and a guard were shot while sitting in a car parked blocks away from Congress.
