Burma to Allow Detained Opposition Leader to Meet Fellow Party Members
Burmese state television says detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be permitted to meet with members of her National League for Democracy Friday. The broadcast said she would also meet with Aung Kyi, the military government's liaison with her.
The announcement late Thursday came just hours after U.N. special envoy Ibrahim Gambari left Burma, saying he had made progress during his six-day mission toward establishing dialogue between its military government and the opposition.
Gambari met briefly with Aung San Suu Kyi before his departure. He was on his second visit to Burma since a September crackdown on pro-democracy protests led by Buddhist monks.
In a statement released after his meeting with the detained Burmese opposition leader, Gambari said a process has begun that would lead to "substantive dialogue" between the government and Aung San Suu Kyi.
On Wednesday, Burma's military leaders rejected Gambari's proposal to arrange a three-way meeting between a Burmese official, Aung San Suu Kyi and himself.
