Carl Bildt to Middle East peace conference in Annapolis
On Monday 26 November, Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt will travel to Annapolis in Maryland, USA, to take part in the peace conference on the Middle East arranged by the USA for 26-27 November. Sweden is one of a limited number of countries to be invited to the peace conference.
"This must be seen as recognition of our commitment to these issues in recent times. Since the Oslo Agreement, Norway has held a special position in these contexts but now, for the first time, Sweden has also been invited to a meeting of this type in a more limited circle," comments Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.
The meeting on the Middle East was discussed between Carl Bildt and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when they recently met in Washington. Mr Bildt then emphasised the importance of bringing about final status negotiations, starting in Annapolis, a process that will hopefully continue in the coming year.
"We must find conditions for a peace agreement that will be accepted in referendums by both Palestinians and Israelis. This will require substantial efforts on the part of the USA, Europe and other interested parties," said Mr Bildt when he met the press after the meeting with Condoleezza Rice.
