Eco-Tourism: Explore New Caledonia's East Coast

Explore New Caledonia's East Coast

A new eco-tourism and adventure resort is set to open on the East Coast of New Caledonia early next year. Set on a white sand beach, Tieti Tera Beach Resort will open the doors to its first guests in April 2008, setting a benchmark in eco-tourism and adventure for the area and a true gateway to the Kanak culture for visitors.

"You need to travel out of the main centre of Noumea to discover the spirit and magic of New Caledonia and this is one of the main reasons that the Tera Hotels & Resorts chain was started," says Stephane Derommelaere, Sales and Marketing Manager.

"The Tera chain is about designing resorts that adapt and blend in with their environment, in enchanting places with plenty of character."

The 3-star resort is set in 2.7 ha of woodland, dotted with coconut palms and 100 hundred-year-old banyan trees, on the biggest and most beautiful white sand beach on the East Coast.

"The bungalows are covered in wooden tiles of an unusual design and roofs inspired by a local fruit by the name of 'bonnet d'évêque' (bishop's mitre). This creates a mix of modern and traditional architecture styles," Stephane says.

Local people are very much part of the Tera philosophy, employed in the construction of the resort, trained to work in it once it's completed and offering cultural activities for guests.

"When the resort does open, more than 50 tribal families will benefit directly; there will also be many secondary occupations - agriculture, fishing, local crafts - which will provide a regular income without the need to leave their home environment," she says.

The resort will cater for all markets - suites for the honeymooners and inter-connecting rooms for families. There are also conference rooms for the business and incentive groups.

The resort has a swimming pool and offers canoeing, petanque, beach volleyball, tennis and snorkelling complimentary. Scuba diving, fishing, hiking, bicycle, 4x4 tours and a 'tribal life experience' can all be booked on-site.

Tieti Tera Beach Resort is the first property in the Tera Hotels & Resorts chain and more resorts are planned to be built in the future.
