PM pays tribute to "Courageous" Bhutto
The Prime Minister has said that "cowards afraid of democracy" assassinated Benazir Bhutto earlier today.
Ms Bhutto was killed in a terrorist attack on her convey as it prepared to leave an election rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. At least 15 other people are reported to have died in the attack.
Speaking to television media, Mr Brown said Ms Bhutto was a woman of "immense personal courage and bravery".
The PM added that she risked everything to bring democracy in Pakistan. Terrorists must not be allowed to kill democracy in Pakistan he said.
"This atrocity strengthens our resolve that terrorists will not win there, here, or anywhere in the world.
"And we will work with all Pakistani community in Britain and elsewhere in the world, so that we can have a peaceful, and safe, and democratic Pakistan."
The attack took place in advance of national elections planned for January 2008. Ms Bhutto had twice been Prime Minister of Pakistan between 1988 and 1996.
