SI Government Sends Medical Students To Cuba
The Solomon Islands Government today sends 25 students to attend medical training in Cuba.
The arrangement was progressively made between the governments of Solomon Islands and Cuba in previous years when the two countries establish diplomatic relations.
Last year, former Foreign Affairs Minister Patterson Oti pursued the deal and secured an agreement with the Cuban government which indicated its willingness to assist Solomon Islands in the health sector.
Foreign Affairs Officer in charge of the United Nations and the Americas, Trevor Unusu will travel with the students as the chief government facilitator of the trip.
Mr Unusu said the students will undertake studies in different medical fields funded by the Cuban government.
He said the next 25 students will leave for Cuba in July when arrangements are finalized.
Meanwhile 10 medical doctors from Cuba are expected to arrive in the country at the end of March.
Mr Unusu said part of his trip to Cuba is to facilitate arrangements for the doctors.
A team leader of the group is expected to arrive in early March.
The Coalition of National Unity and Rural Advancement (CNURA) government believes the Cuban specialist doctors will contribute towards improved health services in the country.
Cuba is topping the world in terms of access to health care services.
