Aussie Comments "Preposterous" -- Epeli Ganilau
Statement from the Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration - Ratu Epeli Ganilau
Comments made by the Australian Authorities that the Republic if Fiji Military Forces is responsible for making threats against the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji is preposterous and indeed unsubstantiated.
The Government has consistently maintained that it will not tolerate any threats by any person against diplomats in Fiji.
Government and indeed its Military are fully aware of its obligations under the Vienna Convention.
It has and will provide the necessary security to any diplomat in Fiji.
Should Mr Batley, who is moving around Fiji freely, not withstanding the threats, feel that he needs more security presence, then Government shall provide it after an assessmemt.
The Australian authorities who are occupying themselves with speculation would do better by spending their time with facts.
Fiji has no record of allowing or engaging in activities that would cause harm to its diplomatic community. The Government will ensure that this record remains unblemished.
