Burma: 8/8/88 Anniversary Protest Begins

Security has been tightened in Rangoon as university students prepare to participate in anti-junta protests to mark the 20th anniversary of 8/8/88. During the 1988 "People Power" revolution more that 3,000 protesters died in clashes with the military. Many arrested during and after the uprising are still languishing in Burmese jails.

A Burmese student movement known as "Generation Wave" has launched a “Red Campaign” ahead of Friday's anniversary, spraying red paint on the walls of schools and other public places in Rangoon to remind people of the bloody events of 1988. Moe Thway, a leading member of “Generation Wave”, said “We are doing this as evidence that we are not defeated, despite military suppression. We young people will continue our struggle for justice and freedom for all Burmese citizens.”
