RAMSI congratulates Nauru on their National Day

OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL COORDINATOR

REGIONAL ASSISTANCE MISSION TO SOLOMON ISLANDS

MEDIA RELEASE Saturday 31 January 2009

RAMSI congratulates Nauru on their National Day

RAMSI’s new Special Coordinator, Graeme Wilson, today congratulated Nauru on their National Day and thanked them on behalf of the other 14 contributing countries of the Regional Assistance Mission for their valuable work.

Mr Wilson said that the contribution of police officers from Nauru towards the mission’s Participating Police Force was tremendous and very much appreciated given Nauru’s small population.

"I want to thank Nauru contingents past and present. Their contribution has helped pave the way for the return of law and order in Solomon Islands and the longer-term task of developing the confidence and capacity of Solomon Islands officers to be an effective and professional police force,’’ Mr Wilson said.

There are currently three Nauru members working with RAMSI, Paul Harris, Kazz Olsson and David Canon.

Nauru has provided police officers since RAMSI’s inception in July 2003. With Nauru’s population of around 10,000, their contribution to RAMSI represents an extraordinary act of generosity.

The countries that make up the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands are Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
