ABD Communicates Sympathy And Support To Solomon Islands Following Floods
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (9 February 2009) –
Floods caused by heavy rains have devastated parts of the northwest area of Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands. At least 10 people have died in the floods and as many as 2000 people have been displaced from their homes.
ADB has conveyed condolences to the Solomon Islands Government and is closely monitoring the flood situation and has indicated a willingness to work with other partners in helping the Solomon Islands Government conduct a damage and needs assessment of transport infrastructure in the affected areas.
Temporary repair work has already commenced reconnecting flood affected rural areas to urban centres for access to markets and social services. This roads and bridges repair work is being conducted by the Solomon Islands Road Improvement Project (SIRIP) team, co-financed by ADB, and the Governments of Australia and New Zealand.
ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. Established in 1966, it is owned by 67 members—48 from the region.
