New ITF Aid Shipment Sets off for Gaza
New ITF aid shipment sets off for Gaza
A third aid shipment from global union federation the ITF will leave Jordan tomorrow morning bound for Gaza. Unlike the previous two ITF cargoes, which were airlifted in specially chartered planes, this one will go by road, as part of a Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization aid convoy.
The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) load will include tents, blankets and hospital cots for newborn babies. Bilal Malkawi, ITF Representative for the Arab World, commented: “All the supplies are those that medics in Gaza say they need most, and we aim to get everything they have requested in one lorryload, which will leave Amman tomorrow and cross into Gaza at Karam Abu Salem.”
The ITF previously dispatched a plane carrying operating theatre equipment, first aid supplies, burn dressings, medicine and milk for newborn babies to Gaza on 21 January. It followed an earlier aid flight organised with the assistance of Jordan’s General Trade Union of Workers in Air Transport and Tourism, which carried a cargo of medicines and ambulances on 8 January.
Photos of the cargoload will be available late on Tuesday. Please email Dawson_sam@itf.org.uk if you would like to receive them.
The international trade union movement, including the ITF, ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) and the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) have all backed a call for trade unions to sponsor humanitarian relief aid to Gaza.
