Bush Investigation

Bush Investigation

A USA Today/Gallup poll shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans want an investigation of potential wrongdoing by the Bush administration. But Republican Senators and some Democrats are preparing to stop the creation of a Congressional Truth Commission that will get the job started.

At a hearing held by Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont yesterday, Leahy called for Congressional action now. While Republican Sen. Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania called it a "fishing expedition."

The Washington Post says Republicans are "confident of victory." That's because they haven't heard from you.

Reach your Senators today by calling the Senate switchboard.

Here's a suggested script:
"I'm calling because I want my Senator to know that I support a Congressional Truth Commission to investigate constitutional abuses by the Bush administration. Congress must make sure torture, warrentless wiretapping, and other serious abuses never happen again. Can you tell me where the Senator stands on this issue?"
Tips:

  • olite no matter what. Be sure to thank your Senators if they already support a Commission.

  • Keep your statement short. The more the lines are free, the more DFA calls they will receive.

  • Don't go on a rant. Congressional staff pass on the number of calls and gist, but rarely specifics. A rant is more likely to get your message lost or anger a tired staffer who could choose to not pass on your call.

DFA and Sen. Leahy have gathered over 100,000 signatures on a petition calling for the truth already, but this fight will take more than a petition to win. We need to fire on all cylinders to keep the past from being swept under the rug. Congress needs to know that America Demands the Truth.

Take action today. Please make your call now.
