First National Protest of Wars Under Obama Will Take Place in 17 U.S. Cities

When: Thursday March 19, 2009

Where: Protest In Berkeley, Ca

3:00 PM Rally at Martin Luther King Jr. Park (next to Berkeley High School)

4:00 PM March thru Berkeley, including: to the Marines Recruiting Station, 64 Shattuck Square and to the UC campus

In 17 U.S. cities, protesters will leave work and school to demonstrate in the first nation-wide protest against the (now expanding) wars under President Obama, demanding:
Stop U.S. Occupations And Torture For Empire! U.S. Out Of Iraq & Afghanistan!
No Wars On Iran, Pakistan, Gaza! The World Can’t Wait!

Berkeley rally speakers include Cindy Sheehan, anti-war military veterans and students, and World Can’t Wait activists.

Marching through downtown Berkeley, protesters will carry a 10-foot tall statue of “Uncle Sam” with the face of Barack Obama, as they also denounce heightened military recruitment. They will take the statue to the door of the Marine Corps Recruiters, site of constant protest over the past year.

World Can’t Wait http://www.worldcantwait.org is internationally known for its persistent opposition to the Bush regime’s crimes, from pre-emptive war to torture and illegal government spying. Giovanni Jackson of World Can’t Wait says of the wars in the Middle East: “These actions under Obama are just as immoral as they were under Bush…and there are millions of us who don’t want these crimes carried out.”

Times coverage of “Torture Professor” John Yoo (still a tenured Berkeley faculty member despite his infamous role in generating the new torture state) notes: “The anti-war activist group World Can't Wait has been most active in organizing against Yoo.
