Another Bomb Blast Rocks Rangoon

Another Bomb Blast Rocks Rangoon

Press Release: Terry Evans

30 March 2009

Rangoon has been rocked by the third bomb blast in less than a month. The latest explosion occurred at a guest house in the city's North Okkalapa township, killing a man and wounding two women.

The ruling junta has been quick to blame the Whole Burma United Revolutionary Front, who claimed responsibility for twin bomb blasts in Rangoon earlier in the month.

The latest explosion was timed to coincide with the anniversary of Anti-Fascist Resistance Day. On 27 March 1945, the people of Burma rose against the Japanese fascists, who were occupying the country claiming to protect the independence of Burma.

The Whole Burma United Revolutionary Front is strongly opposed to the scheduled 2010 general election, alleging that the junta will rig the vote to prolong the repressive military rule of Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won more than 80 per cent of parliamentary seats in the 1990 general elections. However the military junta, which has ruled the country for nearly half a century, refused to hand over power and Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest.
