The Holocaust vs Israeli Occupation

The Holocaust And Israeli Occupation Cannot Be Compared

[Middle East News Service Comments: This News Service is lucky to have made arrangements several months ago with the US Jewish Voice for Peace to take advantage of them having a reporter at the Durban 11 Conference in Geneva. (I had considered going there myself). While I am waiting on Cecilie Surasky’s report on the address by the Iranian president I already know that it was an incredibly inflammatory speech where the general notion of a fight against racism didn’t rate a mention (at least in the first six minutes that I could handle listening to). Ahmadinejad dispenses with any introductory comments, other than religious ones, and launched immediately into a tirade against Israel accusing it of genocide.

Israel has committed some terrible crimes against the Palestinian people but describing it’s actions as a Holocaust or genocide is simply historically wrong, a point recently made by Robert Fisk. This time it is Gideon Levy, whose name is used generically is Israel for someone who can see the Palestinian point of view, who articulates the notion.

If there are any supporters of the Palestinians who were not convinced by Fisk that drawing the Holocaust analogy serves the interests of their enemies I recommend they read Levy. For the rest of us it is a salient reminder on Yom Hashoah (The Holocaust Commemoration Day as chosen by Israel and adopted by most Jews around the world) – Sol Salbe.]
