Hindus concerned about del Toro’s “Deadman”

Oscar nominated Guillermo del Toro (El laberinto del fauno) will reportedly produce big-screen adaptation of DC Comics character “Deadman”, and Hindus are concerned.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that if del Toro intended to portray Hindu gods/goddesses or concepts in the film, they would urge him to stay true to their depiction in the scriptures. If that was not possible, they would request him to rename the characters and concepts and not use word Hindu at all.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that gods/goddesses and religious traditions were highly revered among devotees and the misrepresentation was likely to hurt their feelings. Moreover, Hinduism was largely misunderstood outside India and distortion would add to the confusion. If del Toro needed any Hinduism expertise, he or other Hindu scholars would gladly provide.

Nikolaj Arcel (Kongekabale) will possibly direct this movie for Warner Bros, which reportedly mentions “Hindu goddess” and “Rama” in the comic book storyline. “Deadman” is a comic book superhero who first appeared in October 1967.
