Hunger Strike Ends on Day 52

Spencer Ends Hunger Strike To Continue Fight On The Ground

On day 52 of his Hunger Strike, which was initiated to correspond with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at Copenhagen, Peter Spencer (61 years old) comes down from the suspended platform part way up a wind monitoring tower on his Shannon's Flat property “Saarahnlee” near Cooma, NSW.

Spencer's passive protest is not in vain. It has placed issues at the fore front of every Australian and gained unprecedented attention across Australia, and the world concerning thousands of Australian farming family’s property rights which have been stolen to meet Australia’s entire Kyoto Protocol International Treaty Obligations and in so doing, breaching Australia’s Constitution.

Spencer has been under increasing pressure from supporters about his welfare and in response has said, “As much as the nation is concerned about me, my concerns are directed at the families of the hundreds of farmers who have suicided and the politicians who have failed to show any concern, compassion or morality for what the government has done to these families and the nation’s Constitution. My committed stance on the tower was to press the point.”

Spencer has been in contact with his Doctor who was becoming increasingly concerned about his electrolyte levels and other developing medical issues. The Doctor has strongly recommended that Spencer end his hunger strike. Following this recommendation and the call from Australians across the nation, Spencer has decided to come down from his platform. He will be hospitalised until the doctors are satisfied that his body is functioning normally again. He is still mentally strong and alert.

Not backing away, Spencer is determined to pursue the two main issues being the Royal Commission and just payment for thousands of Australian farming families with all his physical and intellectual resources. In addition, a range of other unjust matters, which have been brought to light by the Australian people across the nation over the last 52 days. Spencer said “I will be relentless in this pursuit and call upon all Australians to help make our nation a society truly “FOR”, “BY” and “OF” the People.”

Peter Spencer’s children and family are very happy to have him safe on the ground and grateful to all of Australia for the unwavering support and encouragement through this difficult time. “We are so proud of the man he is” said Sarah Spencer, Peter’s daughter. “He is truly dedicated to making Australia a better place for all of us.”
