Jerusalem, Israel, Wednesady, June 02, 2010 – A visual artist in Israel combined forces with a musician and Band in England, on a joint video project they hope will give voice to public anger and bring about global policy changes in Oil Drilling Procedures; following the Oil Leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
Artist Yisroal Boaz Ginsberg (his Hebrew name) is a former New York City Street Artist who championed Artists First Amendment Rights when they are showing or selling art in the public spaces of New York City. He was a successful plaintiff (Knut Masco) in two separate Federal Lawsuits that changed NYC law [Lederman v.NYC 1994] & [Lederman v. Giuliani 1998] .
Yisroal Boaz and his wife Rachel moved to Israel with their then four children in August of 2001. “We raised the money for our airline tickets selling paintings and my wife’s ceramic art in the streets of SoHo N.Y., in the shadow of the then Twin Towers, a month before they came crashing down”.
They settled in Jerusalem taking various jobs and raised their ever growing family. His wife Rachel had an epiphany one day and thought “gee wouldn’t it be novel to open a T-shirt boutique in Jerusalem that offered clothing and baby gifts with Hebrew writing on them that actually had a positive message”. They did and opened a tiny little shop they named HebrewTshirts. Rachel manned the shop full time while Yisroal stayed home as a house husband and cared for the now seven children. Needing to fulfill his creative tendencies he began making videos in hopes of promoting the small family business and uploading his videos to Face Book and YouTube.
That is where Yisroal Boaz met Musician Bob Ponton , lead guitarist and song writer of a English Folk/Rock Band called Pandamonium . The two commented and critiqued each others posts on Face Book, Bob on Yisroals promotional videos and Yisroal on Bob’s music uploads.
Then last week Ponton posted a song on or around May 23, that really intrigued Yisroal creatively. A melancholy, morose tune that focuses on greedy men who get rich whilst destroying our fragile eco systems. “I wrote it in 1971 after seeing a program on this money mad guy who was dumping waste chemicals and destroying the world but in those days people didn’t seem to care”. Yisroal was profoundly moved by Bob’s song.. “The track was recorded in east London about 1980 and its only just seen the light of day; the tapes were lost for thirty years and a copy was found in a loft in Scotland “.
The connection between the BP Oil Rig Leak in the Gulf of Mexico and Bob Ponton’s song was undeniable, even though it had been written some forty years earlier; the connection was eerie. Yisroal decided to use his video making talents to try and make a global statement on the Oil Spill using Ponton’s song as the video’s soundtrack. As Yisroal searched out usable imagery for a video and researched the Gulf disaster he learned that this tragedy could have been prevented were it not for the old chestnut of corporate profit over public and environmental safety.
Yisroal and Bob now call on artists worldwide to focus their attention on the environmental crises in the Gulf of Mexico. “Artists are the voice of society and we should use our talents in music, painting, sculpture, performance art , poetry, videos, etc, to send a clear and resonating message, that hopefully can bring about Global policy changes in Oil Drilling procedures. And stress that corporate profit margins can not be placed before public and environmental safety. Quoting the video and song title, the two artists say “enough - making money killing my world”!
In addition Yisroal Boaz and Bob Ponton have also created a group on the social networking site Face Book named, A.R.T.D.E.C.O - Artists Response To Destruction of Eco Systems And urge artists from around the world to join the group and post relevant art, photographs, and music about environmental issues to it today.
