Defence Enhances Regional Peacekeeping Cooperation

Australia and Thailand will further enhance regional peacekeeping cooperation by co-hosting the multilateral peacekeeping exercise, Exercise Pirap Jabiru, in Bangkok from 29 July to 6 August.

Having commenced in 1998, Exercise Pirap Jabiru was expanded in 2006 to include participants from around the region. In 2010, a total of 14 countries are sending military and police participants, making the exercise a significant regional event while highlighting the commitment of both Australia and Thailand in promoting regional peacekeeping efforts.

"Exercise Pirap Jabiru will give participants a greater understanding of the planning processes of individual countries and those of the United Nations," Commandant of the ADF Joint Warfare, Doctrine and Training Centre, Air Commodore Richard Owen said.

"The exercise also provides an opportunity to develop shared approaches to resolving the complex problems inherent in peacekeeping operations and will enable regional countries to work together better on peacekeeping operations."

In addition to presentations by peacekeeping experts from Australia and Thailand, the seminar includes contributions from other regional nations, non-government organisations and the United Nations.

Exercise Pirap Jabiru remains a benchmark activity that enhances the ability of regional nations to contribute to peacekeeping operations around the world.
