Israel Launches Airstrikes On Gaza
Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza
GAZA: Israel is
carrying out airstrikes on Gaza, apparently in retaliation
for a rocket attack on the city of Ashqelon.
* Rocket attack yesterday was first in over a year. Analysts believe it may have been part of an attempt to undermine resumption of direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
* Mayor of Ashqelon called launch of Chinese-made Grad artillery rocket "the most serious event since Operation Cast Lead", the Israeli military offensive on Gaza in January last year. The United Nations condemned the attack.
* Reports suggest airstrikes are currently underway.
