Remember Sheikh Jarrah Picket
Remember Sheikh Jarrah Picket
On August 6th 2009 the Ghawi and Khanoun families in Sheikh Jarrah were evicted from their homes by Israeli Authorities. One year later, these families are still displaced. There are more than 6 million other refugees from Palestine making them the largest refugee group in the world. Students for Palestine says such behaviour by Israel is a regular occurence in Palestine and that by hosting an Ambassdor and Embassy for such a state, New Zealand is rewarding such intransigence.
Spokesperson for the group Anita Clarke, says extending
relations between Israel and New Zealand should depend on
Israel making moves towards peace and ending its occupation
of Palestinian territory.
But Israel is doing the exact
opposite. Despite continuous calls from the international
community, Israel continues to build illegal Jews only
settlements on the West Bank and East Jerusalem. At the same
time its tearing down Palestinian homes in the same
places.
In Palestine, August 6th has been declared a
national day of solidarity, with protests in Haifa, Bil
Tel Aviv, Ramle, Lyd, Yafa, etc to oppose these evictions.
In Wellington, groups from around the region including
Students for Palestine, Wellington Palestine Group, Kia Ora
Gaza and Workers Party NZ are showing support by having a
picket outside the recently established Israeli Embassy to
show our solidarity with the Palestinian people and to
remind Israel that they not welcome here while such
atrocities continue.
"Under Israel, there is no place
for Palestine or the Palestinians, which is why we must
stand in solidarity with those struggling against Zionism
and the violence of the Israeli Authorities on a day to day
basis."
A PICKET WILL TAKE PLACE FRIDAY 6TH AUGUST AT 5PM, MIDLAND PARK, LAMBTON QUAY BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE LAMBTON SIDE OF THE ISRAELI EMBASSY.
SPEAKERS INCLUDE REPRESENTATIVES FROM STUDENTS FOR PALESTINE, KIA ORA GAZA, WELLINGTON PALESTINE GROUP, WORKERS PARTY NZ.
