Repression of Trade Unions in Northern Cyprus
Repression of Trade Unions in Northern Cyprus
Brussels, 6 August 2010 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) have issued a joint statement strongly protesting against the arrest of 24 trade unionists on August 3 in Northern Cyprus while they were demonstrating against the austerity policy and privatisation projects of the local administration. They are calling on the authorities to end the policy of anti-union harassment and to return to negotiations and social dialogue.
The ETUC and ITUC have expressed their solidarity with their affiliated organization in Northern Cyprus, TÜRK SEN, and will address the issue to the European Union.
The ITUC represents 176 million workers in 156 countries and territories and has 312 national affiliates. http://www.ituc-csi.org and http://wwwyoutube.com/ITUCCSI
