Nominations open for Amnesty International’s Human Rights Defender Award

This year celebrities, politicians and ordinary New Zealanders have been telling Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand what human rights mean to them through the organisation’s “I Human Rights campaign”.

Long-term Amnesty supporter and volunteer Susan Grimsdell loves human rights because ‘when we take away the rights to freedom, respect and equality we become less than human’.

And artist Angela Tiatia loves human rights because ‘they protect us against human wrongs’.

Human rights mean different things to different people and all around the world every day hundreds of people are working in countless ways, to promote, protect and defend human rights.

On December 10th, International Human Rights Day, Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand will present its Human Rights Defender Award to one person from New Zealand or the Pacific region who has made an outstanding contribution to the protection of human rights.

Nominations for the Human Rights Defender Award are now open and will be accepted until 5pm on Monday 15th November.
