Statement By The Prime Minister - Idul Fitri

Statement By The Prime Minister - Idul Fitri

Today on Idul Fitri we reflect on the importance of family and friends and the value of peace and of unity.

This is a special day where Muslims and non-Muslims alike can come together to celebrate our shared humanity in a spirit of solidarity and tolerance.

The Government of Timor-Leste has declared today a national holiday to allow our People to join in pray and festivity. Idul Fitri provides as with an opportunity to reinforce our bonds of care and friendship and to embrace different traditions, cultures and beliefs.

Today Muslims also ask for forgiveness for any wrongdoings they have committed in the past year. We would all benefit from this approach and all Timorese are encouraged on this day to forgive those that have done wrong against us. Through forgiveness we can heal our wounds as a people and move forward with dignity.

Today, we are also reminded of our close friendship and solidarity with our neighbour Indonesia. As the people of the great nation of Indonesia enjoy Idul Fitri, we can also celebrate our strong bonds with our neighbour and commend Indonesians on their contribution to peace, tolerance and democracy in the region and throughout the world.

Today, we join in prayer and celebration with our Muslim brothers and sisters. I encourage all Timorese to embrace the spirit of Idul Fitri by forgiving those that have wronged us and to show tolerance and peace to our neighbors and our friends.
