2010 Māori Language Awards Finalists

Finalists for 2010 Māori Language Awards announced

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission) announces finalists for the 2010 Māori Language Awards today. 26 finalists across 13 categories have been identified.

“The way in which our nation is embracing te reo Māori is heartening and these finalists exemplify the capacity and generosity of spirit that is alive and well in Aotearoa” says Chief Executive Glenis Philip-Barbara.

“We received a number of high caliber entries this year and continue to be impressed by the range of initiatives showcasing creativity and innovation in Māori language promotion and revitalisation”.

“It’s also timely to acknowledge our independent judging panels drawn from across the community who perform the onerous task of assessing all the entrants. We are very grateful for their continued commitment to the Awards” says Glenis Philip-Barbara.

The finalists for the 2010 Māori Language Awards are: Te Kōtuku Rerenga Tahi Ltd (Gisborne); Raukawa Charitable Trust (Tokoroa); Anglican Parish of Greymouth and Kumara (Greymouth); Auckland Museum; Wellington City Council; Auckland City Council; Dunedin Public Libraries; Inland Revenue; New Zealand Qualifications Authority; TVNZ; Turanga FM (Gisborne); Māori Television; Awawhenua Ltd (Rotorua); The Gisborne Herald; Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi (Whakatāne); Te Tari Puna Ora o Aotearoa (Wellington); Christchurch Polytechnic of Technology; Tokoroa High School; Albany Primary School; Kaiti School (Gisborne); Petone Central School; Massey University.

Note that some entrants are finalists in more than one category.

Winners of the 13 categories and the winners of the closed awards Te Tohu Aumangea (made to a community based organisation or initiative in acknowledgement of outstanding commitment to the language) and Taku Toa Takimano (recognising an individual’s efforts and contributions to the language) will be announced at the Awards evening which is part of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori national language event Huia Te Reo, Saturday 9 October at the Rotorua Energy and Events Centre.

The Supreme Award, Te Tohu Huia Te Reo, will also be announced.
