Akinimo Sampson: Armed Conflict in Eket

A GANG of 10 armed men on Wednesday morning, shattered the relative peace in Eket, home of the American oil giant, ExxonMobil, when they abducted an Indian lady, killing her police security guard and her driver.

AkanimoReports sources claimed that the gunmen stormed the oil town in three flashy cars with masked registration numbers. Panic-striken residents and workers allegedly took to their heels as intense gun shots choked the clouds in the area.

An eye-witness in the Afaha-Eket axis of Eket Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, where the incident took place, said the Indian was on her way to work at around 8am along Grace Bill Road, Eket.

The abducted Indian whose name was given as Mrs. Lakshmi Tombush Itauma, is said the be the Manager of Pegasus Schools in Eket.

Although the Police in the area were reluctant to comment on the incident, a community activist, Mr. Maurice Edoho-Eket, says the incident has left the area in shock.

''I lack words to talk to you on what happen at Grace Bill Road in Afaha-Eket this morning at about 8am. Mrs. Itauma, an Indian who manages Pegasus Schools in Eket, was abducted by dare-devil gunmen on her way to work'', Mr. Edoho-Eket said.

Continuing, he added, ''Mrs. Itauma's Mobile Police guard and her driver were feared killed by the gunmen''.

The abducted Indian national is the widow of the late Tombush Itauma, a Nigerian from Eket. ENDS
