President Should Accept Responsibility For Abuse
President Should Accept Responsibility For Human Rights Abuses
There must be accountablity by the government for the acts of torture by members of the armed fore that have been circulating in the electronic and print media, said human rights activist Sebby Sabom, speaking alongside the chairman of Solidarity in Concern for Democracy and Human Rights, as well as a representative of the Catholic students organisation PMKRI and the Association of Students in the Highlands. There must be these openness regarding every human rights violation.
'What we want is for the government to acknowledge that human rights violations are occurring and being perpetrated by their own security forces, the TNI/Armed Forces and the Police.'
Taking responsibility should also mean withdrawing all non-organic troops from Tinggisambut and other places where these violation against the population are continually occurring. Our people are already traumatised by all this violence from the TNI and the police,' he said.
We need not only this acknowledgement but also openness about the violations that have occurred in Papua ever since it became part of the Indonesian Republic.
'Those who have perpetrated these violations must be tried openly, in public for all to see, he said.
All these violations that continue to occur in Puncak Jaya and in Paniai, as they become public should result in this problem being brought to the attention of the UN Human Rights Council.
