Defence review of Engagement
Defence review following Afghan and Australian soldiers involvement in a series of contacts in the Baluchi Valley, Afghanistan*
On 2 November a dismounted patrol made up of Afghan National Army and Australian Mentoring Task Force soldiers was involved in a series of small arms fire exchanges with insurgents in the Baluchi Valley region, Afghanistan.
Following the engagements several locals approached Afghan and Australian soldiers carrying the body of a male claiming that he had been killed by small arms fire.
Defence has begun an internal review of the engagement to determine the facts.
No more information on the claim will be available until the internal review is completed.
One Afghan soldier and an insurgent were wounded in an initial exchange and were evacuated to the Role 2 medical facility at Multi National Base Camp – Tarin Kot (MNBC-TK).
The dismounted patrol was engaged again following the medical evacuation, resulting in the wounding of another insurgent.
The second wounded insurgent was also aero-medically evacuated to a military hospital at Tarin Kot.
No Australian soldiers were wounded in the attacks.
