Tunisia: ITUC Calls for End to Attacks on
UGTT
Brussels, 25 January 2011 (ITUC OnLine): The offices of the UGTT in six Tunisian towns have been attacked. The ITUC is launching an appeal for an immediate end to the violence against the UGTT.
"These physical attacks and the climate of intimidation are inadmissible. At a time when Tunisia is not only full of hope but also full of uncertainty, the UGTT stands as an undisputable force of stability and progress for the future of Tunisian society," said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. "The international trade union movement once again reaffirms its support for its Tunisian affiliate, the UGTT, which played a key and essential role in the mass revolt that brought down the dictatorship in Tunisia."
The ITUC is preparing to file an appeal with the ILO concerning the violent practices deployed in total breach of trade union rights and freedoms.
