Anti-government protesters tear-gassed in Iran
Anti-government protesters tear-gassed in
Iran
14 February 2011
Tehran, Iran - Thousands
of opposition supporters have clashed with
security
forces in the centre of the Iranian capital, Tehran,
leaving
one person killed, dozens injured and many more
arrested.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched in
downtown Tehran in
defiance of the Iranian government and
its security forces. Similar
protests were held in the
cities of Isfahan, Mashhad and Shiraz.
In anticipation of
the rally, authorities stepped up security in
the
capital, blocked access to internet sites, and started
jamming
satellite news channels. Riot police and basiji
militia use teargas on
protesters.
Experts say Tehran
is trying to stop opposition groups from using
Egypt
rally as a means to re-ignite anti-government protests of
2009. It is not yet clear if these protests pose a serious
threat to Iran's
establishment.
US Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton hailed the courage and
aspirations of the
protesters.
