Following the
groundswell of public outrage over the Australian
government's handling of the WikiLeaks cables, this public
forum will ignite momentum to break official Australia's
silence on its responsibilities on the right of free speech,
and on the right of Australian citizens to be protected by
their government.
It will also highlight citizens'
responsibilities to call to account those who deceive and go
to war in our name.
These rights are exemplified in the disclosures by Wikileaks, whose founder, Julian Assange, is Australian, and whose human rights are currently under grave threat.
The meeting will seek to identify the
steps which an engaged public can take in promoting a new
order of openness and justice in the conduct of politics and
of journalism.
