Norway: A crude attack against democracy
Brussels, 23 July 2011 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC expresses its shock and solidarity with the Norwegian people after the horrible bombings in central Oslo and the shootings at the island Utøya outside Oslo.
Media reports on 7 dead in Oslo, at
least 84 dead at Utøya and many people injured.
"This
is a crude attack on the right to engage politically and
against democracy. Our thoughts are with the families and
friends of all the dead people", said Sharan Burrow, general
secretary of the ITUC.
All the children and young people at Utøya were participating in a camp lead by the country's ruling Labour Party.
"To systematically kill of young people who wants to make a better world, is so shocking I cannot even begin to understand. It's more important than ever with democracy, openness and solidarity." , added Sharan Burrow.
The ITUC extends its commitment to stand
up against extremism
everywhere.
