Government launches ‘Ikale Tahi Fridays

A Cabinet decision made on 15th July has set aside every Friday of the week as ‘Ikale Tahi Support Day, in backing the nation's rugby team as they prepare for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Cabinet ministers are urging Tongans nationwide to mark 'Ikale Tahi Support Day each week, until the end of the 'Ikale Tahi teams participation in the tournament.

The Ministry of Works will also be providing two tents for the Tonga Rugby Union Authority for operations leading up to the event.

During Monday's parliamentary sessions, the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano called for the Acting Speaker of the House to join him in donning the national team colour – red – in support of the 'Ikale Tahi this Friday.

“I think it's a good gesture for us to do, and we should support our team,” he said.

Acting Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Alfred Soakai also noted that the Rugby World Cup held regional and international importance.

“Sports is a major part of life in Tonga and this special opportunity to showcase our talent at such a grand scale only comes once every four years,” he said, adding that a simple way to show solidarity is to wear red clothing on Fridays.

Tongas 'Ikale Tahi will face the New Zealand All Blacks for the opening match of the tournament on 9 September at Eden Park, Auckland.

The Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano is scheduled to attend, by special invitation from the New Zealand Government.
