Syria: UN human rights office publishes Fact-Finding Mission

GENEVA – The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Thursday published the Report of the Fact-finding Mission on Syria.

The Fact-Finding Mission was set up by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC)during a Special Session on Syria on 29 April "to investigate all alleged violations of international human rights law and to establish the facts and circumstances of such violations and of the crimes perpetrated...". The HRC, a 47-member state body, requested the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to undertake the mission and produce a report.

The 22-page report, which covers events in Syria over a four-month period from 15 March to 15 July 2011 can be accessed as of 13:00 CET on the UN Human Rights Office website at the following address:

Later Thursday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will brief the UN Security Council in New York on the situation in Syria. And, on Monday 22 August, the Human Rights Council will hold a second Special Session on the situation of human rights in Syria.
