CausePAC Announces Formation

SuperPAC Founded to Support Progressive Candidates Under 40 Years Old

New York, New York—CausePAC, an independent expenditure only committee supporting candidates for political office who will fight for progressive values and represent the unheard voices of Americans under the age of 40, announced its formation this morning. CausePAC is led by a group of young progressives who have worked in politics, government, labor, the private sector, and non-profits.

“Our government isn’t doing enough to fight for the progressive ideals our generation believes in, and the way to fix that is to elect more people from our generation,” said Alex Voetsch, 29, CausePAC board member and Treasurer. “We will inherit America’s uncertain future, and we demand an active role in shaping what that future will be. We can’t afford to wait any longer to finally be heard."

“Instead of fighting for a dynamic economy for all and a society that welcomes every American, the Obstructionist Right has built up a wall against progress,” said Zac Townsend, 25, CausePAC board member and Secretary. “They refuse investments in job creation and education. They won't acknowledge critical environmental issues or fight for social justice. They are actively pursuing policies that disenfranchise students, poor people, minorities, and legal immigrants. They are out of step with America and fanatically committed to a fundamentally wrong political dogma that poll after poll shows Americans disagree with. Worst of all they refuse compromise at every turn, taking our government to the brink over petty issues, jeopardizing our credit and economy.”

CausePAC was founded to ensure that progressive Americans under 40 are better represented in government. “Campaign finance law enables corporations and wealthy donors to have a tremendous impact on determining the political conversation in America in a way that does not represent the best interests of 95% of Americans,” said Chrystal Shoup, 29 and CausePAC member. “CausePAC will combat this by raising grassroots money and supporting candidates who will fight for a more equal and prosperous America for all generations.”

The founding members of CausePAC have already filed the paperwork to start a non-profit organization, as well. It will have two primary goals: issues advocacy, and providing support to young people who are interested in internships in the public and non-profit sectors.

“We have received a great deal of positive feedback before and since we filed our FEC paperwork. I expect we will be able to raise significant funds toward fulfilling our mission,” said Voetsch. “We have already begun reaching out to donors, and are also kicking off a grassroots fundraising campaign. We are excited that we have already generated a lot of interest from progressive organizations and donors.”

“We will have a major impact on races in 2012, and will be actively searching for candidates who embody our mission to support.” Townsend continued: “The young, unentrenched and idealistic are where real change is born. And until we commit to effecting change ourselves, it's unreasonable to expect the type of change that we can really believe in."

What is CausePAC?

CausePAC is an independent expenditure only committee with the mission of supporting candidates for political office who will fight for progressive values and will represent the unheard voices of Americans under 40.

Who Started CausePAC?

CausePAC was started by a group of young progressives who have worked in politics, government, labor, the private sector, and non-profits.

Who will CausePAC support?

Our by-laws dictate nomination and selection committees which will determine the process for selecting candidates. We are committed to supporting candidates who are dedicated to progressive values and represent the voice of the under 40 electorate. We are focused on Congress, but also hope to support state legislature and local candidates who embody our ideals and are potential future leaders.

How are you different from, say, the PCCC, and similar groups?

CausePAC has a very specific mission: elect young progressive leaders through independent expenditures. No other organization is completely focused on this goal. CausePAC won’t be supporting older candidates, even if they are strong progressives.

In addition to supporting young, progressive candidates, does CausePAC intend to attack candidates who do not share your views?

We don't have any specific plans to launch attack ads like the Obstructionist Right. However, we will advocate against some of the other side’s more radical policies and harmful ideas if doing so will help get young progressives elected to office.
