Where: Rally at BMCC, 199 Chambers Street
Then march to military recruitment centers on Chambers St.

Why: There are four military recruitment centers within two blocks of Borough of Manhattan Community College and Stuyvesant High School

New York NY – On Wednesday, February 15th activists from Occupy Wall Street, We Are Not Your Soldiers, World Can’t Wait, CodePink, Veterans for Peace, NY War Resisters League, Grandmothers Against the War and Washington Heights Counter Recruitment will rally at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers Street.

Elaine Brower, military mom and project coordinator of We Are Not Your Soldiers says, “We want no recruiting centers within 10 blocks of schools! The recruiters are preying on our youth. We call for a public debate with the recruiters.”

In downtown Manhattan, located in close proximity to the campuses of BMCC and Stuyvesant High School, there are four recruitment centers: Army Recruiting Center, 143 Chambers Street; Navy Recruiting Station, 116 Chambers Street; Marines Recruiting Center, 165 Chambers Street; and Air Force Recruitment Center, 157 Chambers Street. Recruiters have unfettered access not only outside the campuses but also inside the schools where they wander around speaking to students.

World Can’t Wait has been conducting a weekly protest in the area since the Army opened the most recent of the four neighborhood recruiting centers in December 2009. Over 10,000 leaflets have been distributed to students, faculty and neighborhood residents.

The groups will rally at noon and then march to the recruitment centers. After a speak-out will be helad against militarization outside BMCC.
