The John D. and
Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced today that the
National Network of Civil Human Rights Organizations, All
Rights for All (Red Todos los Derechos para Todos y Todas
–Red TDT), has received the MacArthur Award for
Creative and Effective Institutions. Through this
award, the MacArthur Foundation honors and supports the
efforts of the Red TDT to address the complex situation of
human rights defenders in Mexico.
The award recognizes innovation and creativity and honors and supports the efforts of the Red TDT in creating strategic spaces for cooperation, solidarity and advocacy in the field of human rights and in promoting changes in favor of a more democratic society, while it also makes visible the complex situation of human rights defenders in Mexico. This is an achievement for the work towards a culture of peace and respect for human rights carried out by the 75 civil society organizations in the 22 states of the country that comprise this Network.
"The award comes at a crucial time for the Red TDT since we are facing the challenge of expanding, diversifying and increasing the knowledge that the society has on the work that human rights defenders carry out in Mexico, as well as to improve their difficult situation in terms of personal and community safety" said Agnieszka Raczynska, Executive Secretary of the Red TDT, when she was notified of this important award.
For his part, the MacArthur Foundation’s President, Robert Gallucci, stated that “from Chicago to Kampala, these extraordinary organizations demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness.” When referring to the award winners for this year, he considered that organizations like the Red TDT “provide new ways to address old problems. They generate provocative ideas and they reframe well-worn debates. And their impact is altogether disproportionate to their size.”
This award not only recognizes the leadership and success achieved by the organizations that comprise the Red TDT, but it is also an investment into their future. The Red TDT will use the funds offered by this award to inform the Mexican society on the true effort and the benefits that are behind the work carried out by human rights defenders and to strengthen the work, protection and security of the groups that make up the Red TDT and that work throughout the Mexican territory.
It is important to highlight that the organizations of the Red TDT have been the target of harassment and aggressions that aim to limit and discredit their work. This acknowledgment of their capacity, efficiency and creativity is an incentive to continue with a labor of more than 20 years in a context where the work of the human rights defenders is often hampered and criminalized.
It should be noted that the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions is an initiative that recognizes and invests in nonprofit organizations around the world who demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness in building a more just and peaceful world. This award has been granted today to 15 organizations in six countries. The Red TDT is the only one from Latin America.
In making these Awards, the Foundation does not seek or accept nominations.
To
qualify, organizations
must demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness;
have reached a critical or strategic point in their
development; show strong leadership and stable financial
management; have previously received MacArthur
support; and engage in work central to one of MacArthur’s
core programs.
