ITF welcomes BALPA as member

Global union the ITF (International Transport Workers¹ Federation) today welcomed BALPA, the British Airline Pilots¹ Association, as its 691st member.

David Cockroft, ITF general secretary, commented: ³We¹re very pleased to see an organisation with the history and stature of BALPA join the ITF family. They will be a valued and welcome addition within the ITF alongside the other transport unions, representing 4.5 million members, that make up this federation.²

He continued: ³The ITF is a powerhouse of international solidarity, with a strong voice worldwide, including with companies, governments and bodies such as the International Labour Organization. BALPA¹s presence is a welcome addition to that voice.²

Jim McAuslan, BALPA general secretary, said: ³This is a strategic decision by BALPA that hits two of our key priorities. Firstly the world is shrinking and the freedom of capital to cross borders is growing; we want to help create a counter-weigh so as to influence international labour standards and decision makers. Secondly we want to extend the practical support we can give to individual members in every corner of the globe, anytime and anywhere, and the ITF¹s reach will help us in that regard.²

The ITF¹s 691 member unions include 275 in the aviation sector, including cabin crew, ground staff, baggage handlers and air traffic controllers.
