Make one mum’s day, change another mum’s life

07/05/2012

Press Release

Make one mum’s day, change another mum’s life

This Mother’s Day, 13 May, around 960 women will die around the world from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, but you can do something about this.

When you say thanks to the important women in your life you also can help World Vision make life easier for a mother, and her family, in the developing world at the same time.

A great way to do this is with a gift from the World Vision Smiles catalogue, for example the ‘Maternal and child healthcare’ gift, which goes towards training for midwives, and programmes on breastfeeding and nutrition for new mums.

Why is maternal health important?

A staggering 99% of all the hundreds of thousands of maternal deaths worldwide happen in the developing world.

However, skilled care before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborn babies, and progress is being made to reduce the number of women dying; in line with one of the Millennium Development Goals.

“Maternal and child health is a serious issue world-wide, and especially in our own backyard, the Pacific” says Chris Clarke, World Vision New Zealand’s CEO.

“But, this Mother’s Day you can help World Vision be part of the solution simply through buying a Smiles gift.”

One way to help: Smiles gifts

Smiles gifts are donations towards items and programmes, like maternal and child healthcare training, livestock – goats, ducks and chickens being the most common – or essentials such as water and education, which can be given on behalf of someone else as a gift to them.

Another great gift to think about for Mother’s Day on 13 May is the ‘Multiplying gift’. Because of World Vision’s partnership with the UN World Food Programme every dollar you spend on this gift allows six dollars of much needed food aid to be delivered to families in need.

So, join with World Vision this Mother’s Day to brighten both your Mum’s day and the lives of a mother and her children in the communities we work with.
