Mahmoud Sharetih - Letter from the cells of Echell Prison
May 2012
Our steadfast Palestinian people, my brother prisoners who are hunger strikers, stubborn Palestinians breaking their chains, tearing down walls and leaping beyond the narrowness of their cells to a space of dignity and freedom.
Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.
O Knights of the battle for dignity.
The department of the prison services has done its best
to isolate me from contact with other prisoners and the
world since the first day of the strike. I have been moved
from cell to cell and prison to prison, from Nafha to Ayla
to Askalan to Echel. I have been on a spiritual journey
which strengthens my determination to resist these jailers
until we achieve our humanitarian and just demands, the most
important of which are the immediate end to solitary
confinement.
O patient brothers
Allah
has given me the opportunity to address you after 22 days in
which Israeli has used
every means of isolation,
restriction and obfuscation. The prison services think that
they may succeed in weakening our determination which only
knows the language of victory, in a bid to pressure me as
well as my brothers. We are the elite Palestinian prisoners
who are eager for victory in our just humanitarian battle,
or a dignified martyrdom which will expose the ugly face of
this enemy.
O free
people
From my narrow cell, Allah help me find a
Palestinian prisoner who can help me send my message to you.
I confirm the following:
We have signed a pledge and vow, and we have vowed to live in dignity or die as martyrs. Now we and you are more determined than any time, and victory is absolutely coming very soon.
After 22 days of our just humanitarian battle, we declare that we will not accept less than all of our demands, without renunciation. The more time passes, the greater the demands become.
History will
record this resistance and steadfastness in its glorious
pages, and we have vowed that we will not retreat until we
meet our demands. And those who practice oppression against
others will be led to their judgment.
The
prison services are mistaken in thinking that they can
weaken our resolve through your empty stomach, while your
hearts still flow with faith and strength.
A
Greeting to you, O great people indeed, O Palestinians the
knights of this homeland.
In the name of our people and
the people of our nation, I confirm that all of us are
martyrs to this project until we grasp our human rights from
our jailers.
Victory is near
This is your
spring, O knights
Peace be upon you
Your brother
Mahmoud Sharetih
