America's Gun Insanity
America's Gun Insanity
Editor,
Many commentaries have been made in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting which saw 20 small children and 7 adults gunned down. (I have again added my voice on this subject. After the last gun massacre the Los Angeles Times published by views in a letter to editor titled 'America's gun insanity' 09/08/2012).
This time for me the most poignant commentary came from the former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg . He said the onus was on US President Barack Obama to provide leadership on the issue of gun control. He went so far as to state he thought President Obama should make this his priority agenda in his second term in office.('Michael Bloomberg: Failing To Enact Gun Control Will Be A Stain Upon Our Nation'. Huffington Post 18/12)
If the the required action did not happen then 48,000 Americans will be killed in gun violence and that, he said ,is more than the number of American soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
Now that is truly mind blowing, isn't it?
If that doesn't get the Americans thinking nothing will.
And the gun violence and massacres will continue.
President Obama has said he wants to see an end to the gun violence and the human tragedy it produces.
Let's hope he acts decisively to bring about the required change.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
