Minister Applauds Sinta For Ending Teachers Strike

Supervising minister for Education Clay Forau says he was pleased with the commitment and understanding of the Solomon Islands National Teachers Association (SINTA) for accepting to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with the government.

Mr. Forau made the statement after witnessing the signing of the Agreement between the government and SINTA in Honiara on Friday, ending the three weeks teachers' strike.

The Supervising Education Minister said coming up with such an agreement is not always easy.

He however said the Agreement signed between the two parties concerns the future of children and Solomon Islands.

Mr. Forau said he was pleased that the government and SINTA had signed an agreement which will see schools throughout the country resume classes on Monday 14th April.

The Supervising Minister thanked his staff for their commitment in addressing the issues whilst acknowledging the hard work of the Permanent Secretary for Finance and Treasury.

He called on teachers and students to make up for the times lost and cover as much as possible when classes resume.

Meanwhile, President of the National Teachers Association Samson Faisi has apologized for his harsh media comments during the nationwide teachers strike over the past weeks.

Speaking after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the government on Friday, Mr. Faisi admits those harsh statements were made out of frustration.

The SINTA President also apologized for his insensitive comments towards the Prime Minister, Minister for Education and his Permanent Secretary.

Mr. Faisi said, with the signing of the Agreement, SINTA will now work closely with the government through a taskforce established with representatives from both parties to the dispute.

The taskforce will look into the issues raised by SINTA and work on ways to address them effectively.

Schools will now resume class on Monday April 14.
